In line with GNL Quebec’s goal of developing the most innovative and sustainable natural gas liquefaction facility in the world, the organization is proud to announce that it will undertake to operate a carbon neutral facility, and in doing so be part of the solution in the fight against climate change. This zero-carbon goal would be achieved through the reduction of emissions and offset the liquefaction plant’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
As part of this ambitious objective, an agreement has been reached with Université du Québec à Chicoutimi’s (UQAC) Research Chair on Eco-Advising, in an effort to complete a successful research project aiming at identifying actionable and credible solutions supporting the company’s goal of achieving carbon neutral operations at its natural gas liquefaction facility (LNG). Through this collaborative agreement, the Chair will assess potential solutions and provide guidance based on research, science and economics in order to analyze credible GHG emission offsetting solutions.
This research will strive to identify practical means for a large Canadian final emitter to become carbon neutral in Quebec. The search for solutions will include:
• Quantified assessments of GHG emissions savings by solution;
• The types of actions required to curb those emissions;
• Relevant and available analysis tools to support the company’s cost-benefit analysis of potential solutions;
• As well as a ranking of relevant solutions.
Developing a model In practical terms, GNL Quebec will endeavor to curb its carbon footprint with the aim of becoming carbon neutral within years after commissioning.
This goal can be accomplished through initiatives such as:
• Carbon offset from tree planting in Quebec, and potentially across Canada and around the globe;
• The addition of renewable natural gas as part of its supply source;
• Substituting petroleum fuels with liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the transport industry, merchant marine, and industrial processes;
• Implementing other avenues explored in this study.
This ambitious goal is part of GNL Quebec’s vision of developing, building and operating the greenest LNG facility worldwide, a commitment that strongly relies on the region’s Nordic climate and Quebec’s
clean, renewable hydroelectric power supply, which will substantially contribute to the facility’s GHG reduction efforts.
The solutions and other actions targeted to curb GHG emissions, as identified by the company and based on the results of scientific research at the Chair, could lead to the design of a framework for other organizations wanting to join the global effort to reduce GHG emissions and address climate change. The company and its employees are delighted with this collaborative agreement, through which the Énergie Saguenay LNG facility will become an international benchmark.

About Énergie Saguenay Since 2014, GNL Quebec has been working to develop a natural gas liquefaction facility at Port Saguenay. The Project involves liquefaction, storage, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) equipment, and has an estimated cost of CA$9 billion. In addition to major short-, mid- and long-term economic benefits in Quebec, the Project aims to support the fight against climate change in Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world by providing a transition energy that can replace more polluting sources like coal and fuel oil.
